RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION

Do you remember the 1990s?  It was a time where unemployment rose and many talented individuals had a very difficult time finding employment.  It was an employer’s market – and the prevailing employment situation was that if someone ‘did not work out’ they could be ‘got rid of’ quite easily.  How times have changed!

The situation for many is similar in respect of unemployment today.  Can you as a business afford to take the same attitude now?  ‘No’ is the answer to that question.  Employment Law and Employee Rights have changed dramatically over the last decade.  Time, care and effort have to be taken when recruiting and selecting for your business.  This is the time you need to assess how your business operates – do you need to make changes, and if so how would you do this and do you have the skills and attitudes within your team to support you?

The two following observations make the point very well – your business is only as good as the people you employ.

“The 1990s will be remembered by many organizations as their decade;  many others won’t be remembering it at all since they will have ceased to exist.  The events of the 1990s will create such demands for change upon organizations that many will go under.  The major reason they will do so is that they will fail to recruit and retain the people they need to help them change.  People make the place, and people set the pace.”  (Herriot, 1989 p1) See Cost Effective Help for reference.

“Talent is now a critical driver of corporate performance … a company’s ability to attract, develop and retain talent will be a major competitive advantage far into the future.” (From The War for Talent, 2001)  See Cost Effective Help for reference.

Traditional versus bespoke

Are you recruiting using traditional methods of recruiting, which is mainly interviewing (with 1 in 10 success rate) or would you like to spend a little more time and develop a bespoke method of recruiting for your business and be able to predict your employee’s future behaviour in the job you are recruiting for?
